Riot games
Riot Games were very present thanks to their extremely popular Moba League of Legends, especially in the PC gaming scene. Recently, however, several reports have appeared that draw a very ugly picture of the transactions behind the scenes at the developer. Starting from widespread allegations of discrimination due to gender to clashes on their forced vision clauses, which even led to strikes against the studio, the last few months for Riot Games were not particularly good.
SAG-AFTRA strike
The strike of Sag-AfTra looked at the industry in many ways. On macro level it was with almost a year of the longest strike in the history of the Screen Actors Guild. Due to failed contractual terms and conditions for better compensation of synchronous speakers and motion capture performers, there was a strike of the union against several large publishers in the industry, which led to those publishers in their games had to search for alternatives to some pretty well-known actors.
Sony's Rigid Cross-Play Stance
CrossSplay has recently become a hot topic in the industry. Microsoft and Sony were both open to advocates of cross-platform playing, but Sony kept strictly noticed at their attitude that this was not allowed. Several developers, from Chucklefish to Hi-Rez Studios to Gaijin Entertainment, revived publicly to criticize the practices of Sony. After a lot of setbacks in the industry and a great demand on the part of consumers, it seems as if the situation is slowly improving. Games like Fortnite, Rocket League and Dauntless support all the full cross-play. Later this year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare do the same.
Wii u
Nintendo just flies up with the switch - higher than for many years. It is strange to think that you have reached the lowest point a few years ago, which you have probably reached since its founding. The Wii U is undoubtedly one of its biggest, striking mistakes, as the console sells extremely bad thanks to a combination of factors. While the console has definitely a strong library in retrospect, it will always be as a clear mistake in the history books.
PS VITA
But of course, the Wii U has not been the only larger failure in terms of platforms in recent years. Sony was well positioned on the back of the PSP to establish itself as a fixed size in the handheld gaming area. What happened to the PS Vita was exactly the opposite of it. The complete absence of marketing measures, strange decisions of Sony (eg proprietary memory cards) and the lack of support from important third or first providers were just a few of the reasons for the early death of this handheld.
Diablo Immortal
An April Foole outside the season. After years of silence and without major announcements, the BlizzCon 2018 seemed the right time for Diablo to celebrate its great comeback - and just not as it had expected. With a lot of fanfare and a lot of hype, Blizzard entered the stage to ... Diablo Immortal to announce. A free of playable mobile phone title. Neither Diablo 4 nor an extension for Diablo 3 was mentioned. It was not so much the announcement himself, who pulled the wrath of the masses, but the way they were made, who annoyed people.
Bioware Questions
We have discussed countless times that Bioware is no longer what was earlier, and the last few years were a perfect example of this heartbreaking statement. Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem were both misstetries for the legendary developer, and both games were known to have difficult development cycles. The Frostbite Engine directed her ugly head to the disadvantage of both, while a lack of internal leadership, no proper management of the work and problems to be done, which came from the fact that everything was done under EA, also contributed what it were Very bad years for bioware.
Crunch in the industry
Crunch - or overtime for a long time to finish the development of a game - unfortunately always existed in our industry, but in recent years, it has really come to the foreground. And sadly, reports of a terrible crisis and revised developers from different major studios have surfaced lately. From Rockstar with Red Dead Redemption 2 via Bioware with Anthem to Epic Games with the ongoing success of Fortnite, Netherrealm Studios with Mortal Combat 11 and Treyarch with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 stories over the inhuman crisis appeared with alarming frequency. On the other side of the spectrum, there were some remarkable cases in which developers refused to revise their employees, such as Nintendo with Animal Crossing: New Horizons and how they delayed and resrawn entertainment with Apex legends and how they were not the Output of something like Fortnite match. Let's hope that we will see more such stories in the future.
Command and Conquer's "comeback"
You know what you say: Be careful what you want. Command and Conquer was and is one of the largest strategy companies of all time, a true pioneer of the genre. After the fans were at rest for a long time, they for years demanded a comeback - on E3 2018 EA announced this comeback. In the form of a free mobile game that has nothing to do with Command and Conquer. A bitter pill to swallow.
Fallout 76 Start
A bad game can ruin your reputation. The call of Bethesda Game Studios is definitely the lowest, even if it is not permanently damaged. This is due to fallout 76. But not only that the game you started broke, boring and boring was unplayable. No, there were these ridiculous controversy around lake bags, there were stories of players who were locked without good reason randomly. And yes, of course, the game itself was not very good. Bethesda has made constant updates and will introduce new ones. Fallout 76 is not so broken as it used to - but maybe this is an experiment that would have remained untouched.
No Man's Sky Launch
No Man's Sky promised a lot before starting and everything that it promised was to let it sound like it could be a really groundbreaking experience. What came out at the start was nothing to compare with these promises. Many players found themselves repeating and boring, not to mention the different lack of features that the developers had promised they would be in the game. The counter-reaction against Hello Games was almost life-threatening. Luckily, the studio has remained in his vision for the title and has made a great game with several important updates No Man's Sky - one who becomes even better with future updates.
Kojima-Konami Split
For the longest time, Hideo Kojima was the face of Konami and its most successful franchise. When the news came 2015 that the two dissolve - and that's pretty angular -, it was almost groundbreaking. Konami's treatment of Kojima was generally criticized while the fact that the promising restart of Silent Hill would never see the light of the world, and that P.T. Would be pulled from PSN, the entire situation made only much worse.
Star Wars Battlefront 2-Loot Boxes
Lootboxes are currently among the three most owned things in our industry - and we owe Star Wars Battlefront 2 that they are so moved into the limelight. Damn, these predatory and unfair practices do not earn any place in games, let alone when they fulfill the function of a winning mechanism as they did in Battlefront 2 they demanded that a perfect online experience was irreparably clouded.
Shadow of the microtransaktions of the war
BattleFront 2 was not the only major title of the year 2017, where horrendous microtransaktions were used. Middle earth: Shadow of the war was a great sequel in many ways, but its monetization ended in many other cases. It was not a very good decision for Warner Bros. to turn the game - especially in the last phases - into a difficult situation in order to enable aggressive monetization.
